Empowering women through code: unleashing the power of diversity in tech
Failing to pursue a career in IT as a woman from an underserved community is often not a lack of motivation but a lack of access! In Uganda, for example, young women encounter multiple challenges in accessing adequate and formal employment opportunities. The growing demand in the IT sector, however, represents a turning point both for young talent with unmet potential and the constrained market by matching the skills demand – a real chance to create meaningful win-win situations.
Unfortunately, to this day, women are less likely to be employed in the tech sector – and when they are, they get paid less. The gender pay gap of 21.1% in the tech sector, higher than the median gap for the general economy, reflects the urgency for meaningful change. The same happens in African countries, such as Uganda, where the gender gap participation in the tech industry is widening, and women often find themselves stuck in junior and learner roles, hindering their growth and career progression. To address this issue, we at Groundbreaker gGmbH believe it is essential for companies from the Global North to take action and support female talent in sub-Saharan Africa. Implementing a progressive form of corporate giving and engaging employees in a mentorship program can be a powerful step in this direction.
For 5 years, our non-profit organization has been committed to bridging the gap between local initiatives in the Global South and motivated donor companies in the Global North. Our IT scholarship program, “Groundbreaker Talents,” exemplifies our approach to creating win-win situations for young talent and tech companies alike. By focusing on young women from the most underserved backgrounds, we believe in driving change with a gender-centric approach.
Let’s explore how tech companies can move from generosity to effective altruism and how we can all become agents of change to foster diversity and equality in the IT industry!
AI-generated content in SEO: balancing automation with authenticity
Exploring AI’s impact on SEO: merging automated content for efficiency with genuine, human-like connection. Striking this balance is key as AI tools boost content output but risk losing authenticity.
Successful strategy involves infusing AI-generated content with brand’s unique voice and values, aligning with search engine algorithms while prioritizing user experience. In this synergy, businesses can elevate SEO, connecting meaningfully with audiences.
Customizing the Block Editor for client projects
Not every project needs custom developed blocks to provide a great block editor experience for your clients and their use cases. You also don’t need to be a JavaScript wiz to make adjustments to the WordPress core experience. It certainly helps, you can grow gradually into it.
In this talk, we’ll discuss tools and methods for developers to curate the editor experience. Attendees learn about the nature of block.json and theme.json, when to use block styles and block variations. We will also cover server and client site filters with examples and resources to learn more.

Exploring the power of generative styling
Editorial styling has made significant progress since Snowfall, which inspired Gutenberg. With the evolutions, you can automatically generate styles considering content, mood, or data input. As a result, it has become more sophisticated and accessible, truly generative. We’ll review the past looking at generative art and upcoming AI technology, and then explore current tool availability. Discover the need for intent, understand what happens beyond simple prompt-based styling and explore the true power of generative styling.

Friends with ActivityPub – Deine nachhaltige Identität im Web

How to counter arguments from developers, designers, and managers against accessibility
Are you facing aggressive, resistant, or defensive reactions from your design or development colleagues, your marketing department, your managers, or even your full-service advertising agency as soon as you start talking about accessibility? Do you want to learn how to counter and motivate them? Join my talk, and you’ll leave with some fantastic techniques and tactics to persuade them!
This talk is aimed at those who already work in the field of digital accessibility and hold a leadership or inspirational role. It’s essentially a peer-to-peer boost.
One of the worst things that can happen to people in creative professions is feeling confined in their creativity, tools, and toys. Whether it’s graphic design, content, or code, it leads to unproductive frustration.
But in reality, it’s not the rules and guidelines of digital accessibility that cause frustration. It’s the assumptions and misunderstandings associated with it.
In this talk, I will share how I guide and inspire designers, developers, and content creators to rock accessibility.
What’s in it for you?

Another first framework. Let’s talk about performance!
Looking at websites over the past decades, performance is becoming more and more crucial. But still, it’s treated as a “nice to have” or “add-on” late in the development process of a website. What if we would integrate performance into our workflows so we don’t have to worry about it when we’re already done developing?
In my work at the performance-focused WordPress hosting company Servebolt, I come across a variety of developers. From those who build sites using existing themes to those who build their sites from scratch. And many of them have the same problem: their sites aren’t as performant as they could be. Not because they are built badly, but because they aren’t built with performance in mind. It’s treated as an afterthought.
In this talk I will explain why Performance First as a developing methodology should be more widely adapted and what benefits it will bring to you when developing sites for clients.

Sustainability in WordPress: balancing the cost of contribution, business Involvement, and the future of WordCamps
In the evolving landscape of the WordPress industry, striking a balance between the cost of open-source contribution, business involvement, and the sustainability of WordCamps has become a critical necessity. In this talk, we’ll take an honest look at the issues at hand.
We’ll explore the ‚costs‘ and ‚returns‘ of open-source contribution at the individual level. Unseen sacrifices, such as (mental) health and time, too often go unnoticed. Meanwhile, the desired ‚returns‘ range from financial gains and increased visibility to simple recognition. However, not everyone has equal opportunities. We’ll confront the barriers that hinder successful contribution, striving for a truly equitable and sustainable WordPress ecosystem.
Shifting our attention to the business sector, we’ll discuss why many companies remain reluctant to provide ongoing support for contributors, both within and outside their organization. Additionally, we’ll tackle the crucial issue of the perceived lack of return on investment (ROI) for businesses at WordCamps.
As we strive for the future sustainability of the WordPress open-source project and its events, we propose a reevaluation of current restrictions on commercial discourse in our community and during events. We need an environment that offers tangible benefits to both contributors and businesses, without forsaking the communal spirit at the heart of the project.
This talk will critically examine existing norms and practices and issue a clear call to action:
It’s time to pave the way for sustainable contribution to the project, including WordCamps, creating a more balanced WordPress ecosystem.

If we talk about diversity and all that it entails, we can think that it is necessary. WordPress has always been said to be very diverse, but can we improve that diversity? Is it something impossible to achieve?
WPLeaks? Fast guide to preventing data leaks in WordPress
WordPress websites can sometimes have hidden data leak problems, which occur more frequently than one might initially think.
In this talk, I will highlight some common issues concerning data protection in WordPress. We’ll review real examples, discuss why I encountered these issues in certain projects, and I’ll provide tips on how to address them. Whether you’re new to WordPress or have been using it for years, I think it’s essential to be aware of these problems.

Headless into the future of WordPress
The idea of decoupling your website frontend and WordPress backend brings a lot of opportunities and some disadvantages. But who can benefit from this concept? We will have a quick look into the idea and how it works in this brief introduction into Headless and Decoupled.

WordCamps in Deutschland – Ein Neuanfang in 2023?
