WordPress as an empowerment tool for young activists
Dalla parte giusta della storia is a citizenship reform network is composed by a group of mainly foreign-born activists and professionals who, individually or grouped in associations have decided to promote coordinated campaign actions to support the reform of Law 91/1992.
The current law is incapable of representing Italy and today’s Italian’s lives, deliberately discriminating disproportionately against citizens with a foreign origin.
I built this website with WordPress using a Astra template and Elementor – it was a dedicated website to simulate voting for people who weren’t legally able to do it during the last Italian elections.
There are almost 1 million people that don’t have a right to vote, the website received more than 80.000 votes that time using a form I built directly inside the site that allowed people to vote only once.

Most of our sites have been around for a while, so the content probably needs updating and adapting. And if you want to start a new site, you’ll need to create excellent content.

In this talk, I’ll help you to overcome procrastination on website tasks that need your attention. I’ll give actionable tips. I’ll help you set up a manageable plan. I’ll teach you tricks on reaching success with your tedious maintenance tasks, making those tasks much less tiresome.

Re-Humanizing the Web
Can technology dehumanise the Web?
Are the use of AIs, and the lack of tools and spaces from which to facilitate safe, accessible, respectful, and inclusive browsing, favouring the dehumanisation of the Web?
Will a healthy environment that fosters solidarity and universal social values succeed in rehumanising it?
Or should we rethink the values that differentiate us as human beings capable of creating art, music, and literature, and making a difference in terms of social responsibility?

Digital and linguistic accessibility techniques and strategies for deaf people
The misconception that deaf people are ignorant is often due to a lack of accessibility to culture and information.
There are different levels of hearing, and different levels of language knowledge, the use of a sign language and/or hearing aids being only two of the many variables at play. This makes it challenging to provide equal communication environments: not all deaf people use sign language, so an interpreter isn’t always enough; neither is written language, which isn’t always accessible.
It gets even more complicated when it comes to second language learning.
We will explore strategies for making content accessible to deaf people. We will also discuss kind and respectful words to talk about deafness.

SEO and Development. How to Avoid Friction
The working relationship between SEO and developers is usually a tricky one, which does not help with creating a WordPress website that maximises business results, particularly in international projects.
This friction also creates an unhealthy working environment that prevents both teams from achieving objectives in harmony.
In many occasions, this lack of collaboration is due to both organisational barriers and lack of knowledge of how to work with both types of professionals.
Having worked closely with both software engineers and data analysts for over 21 years, this presentation aims at giving attendees some ideas to help in those situations where friction can appear.

Keynote: Sustainable open source is the future
In 2023 we’ve seen some big open source projects almost die or be abandoned. So we think it is time to have an honest talk about open source and more specifically, about how to make open source software projects sustainable in the long run.
Now what does that mean? And how do we do that? Is contributing code enough?
What about funding? And how do we “sell” open source funding to the finance departments in our companies?
And what is it that we fund? What are we “buying”?
In this talk we’ll have a look at how to make open source sustainable and how you can help with this!

For 2024, we’ll be heading to a city known for its history as a centre of innovation – Torino.
The heart of the city is immersed in greenery, with over 300km of tree-lined avenues and parks, leading up to the enchanting Western Alps.
With history stretching back over 2,000 years, the city is fondly known as the ‘aristocratic old lady’ and reborn into a dynamic, innovative and modern city.
