The WP World is now in your pocket.

WordCamp Philippines 2026 Is Underway in Iloilo

August 28, 2026

The WP World already has WordCamp Philippines on the events map. What we didn’t have was the story of the room.

This weekend that room is in Iloilo.

Not Metro Manila. Iloilo City. Pressers from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in the same hall at the Iloilo Convention Center, which is the whole point.

A national WordCamp can look like a tour stop if you’re not paying attention. This one was built like the country. Dan Gabriel Tabifranca is the Luzon lead. Danyl Marie Noelle Maranon is the Visayas lead. Harcy Joy Dela Cruz is the Mindanao lead. The global mentor, JC Palmes, lives in Iloilo. The national community didn’t visit the city so much as meet it in the middle.

Contributor Day was the on-ramp

If you’re reading this stateside on Friday, it’s Saturday in the Philippines. Contributor Day ran yesterday at ICON, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s done.

That’s the day that doesn’t photograph well and the day people actually become Pressers instead of attendees. You sit down. Someone shows you a ticket, a translation string, a photo to moderate. You leave having done something on WordPress, not just having heard about it.

The table leads were named, which I like, because it turns the room into people you can find later. Gerson Lacdao on Accessibility. Carl Alberto on Core. Rolly Bueno on Documentation — he’s from Iloilo. Pie Tandog on Support. Benjamin Intal on Plugins. Arvin Pedregosa on Polyglots. Dan Tabifranca ran Photos. JC Palmes ran Themes. Oneal Rosero ran Training.

New this year for WordCamp Philippines: an Open-Source Library. The format started at WordCamp Asia as the Human Library. You don’t sit through a session. You borrow a person. Experienced contributors make time for one-on-one conversations about how they actually got into this, what was hard, where to start. That’s an on-ramp with a face on it.

The conference is a room, not a grid

Today is Conference Day.

The program has Iloilo City Mayor Raisa S. Treñas for welcome remarks from 8:30 to 9:00, then a keynote from Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue. I haven’t seen a live confirmation that the mayor took the stage, so I’m not writing that she did. She’s on the program. That’s as far as I’ll go.

I’m not walking the rest of the talks. You can find those on the official site. From here, the story is who showed up, and that they showed up in Iloilo.

Local coverage has been putting expected attendance at 500-plus. Five hundred Pressers in one hall, outside Metro Manila, is the number that matters.

Iloilo is in the room too

If you want proof this gathering belongs to the city, look at Thrive Art Projects.

They’re an artist-run gallery in Iloilo. Allyn Canja-Brasileño curates it with her husband, the Iloilo-based artist Kristoffer Brasileño. They already run the magazine and the shop on WordPress and WooCommerce. On Saturday they’re in the Sponsors’ Hall with an exhibit and a zine-making session.

That’s not a vendor booth. That’s a local relationship sitting inside the WordCamp. Their physical space is at the Shops at Atria, if anyone’s in town longer than the conference.

The connective tissue

I wasn’t in the room for Contributor Day. I’m writing this the way I write a lot of these: from the names, the shape of the gathering, and the fact that a national community decided the map didn’t have to point at Manila.

Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao each had a lead. The mentor lives in the host city. Contributor Day put real table leads in chairs. The Open-Source Library made time for conversations that don’t fit a stage. A local gallery is making zines in the sponsors’ hall.

That’s Pressers, in a place, finding each other.

I’ll keep an eye on the rest of the weekend. If you’re in Iloilo, say hello to someone you only know from a Slack name. And if you write a recap when you get home, send it in. That’s how the rest of us catch up.
