Panel Discussion III – Voice for the Voiceless with WordPress
After 14 years there are millions of people around the world using WordPress.
WordPress can be a very empowering tool in the hand of the oppressed, minorities and fringe groups, giving them a voice with privacy and anonymity.
It’s very important to use your voice. And we all have it. It has to be a tool of power, honesty, love, respect. We all must use our voices for good. Speak up when you face or see any unfairness. Use your voice to fight evil. Have it express how you feel and what you think. Use your voice to fight for yourself. Let it be a weapon of peace, goodness, and encouragement.
This Panel discussion will be a frank and honest discussion about, How WordPress helped the Panelist to use their Voice with WordPress.

Panel Discussion I – Women & WordPress – Together how can we make a difference?
Let’s have a look at few of the phenomenal women who, against all odds, became pioneers of the technology world. These women are heroes:
Grace Hopper –developed COBOL and other computer languages, which are still in use today.
These women helped to pave the way for future female generations, who desire nothing more than to succeed in the tech world.
There are so many inspiring women in the WordPress ecosystem across the globe, who have stepped into the modern day shoes of predecessors.
If we compare Active participation of Women in Global WordPress ecosystem with Indian WordPress ecosystem, Few questions that come to mind:
There are lots of women in Indian WordPress ecosystem, they can still do more, and we think speaking is one of those things.
This Panel discussion will be a frank and honest discussion with women who have been involved for different amounts of time in WordPress – ranging from development to designer to marketer.

Importance of Design for Plugin Developers
He has served as a Design Head at companies like Mumbai Educational Trust, Zee TV, Indigo Consulting (A LeoBurnett company), Ziffi and UX consultant for 8 startups in Mumbai Startup scene. Currently am working on projects for Mahindra, JCB, Godrej & ICICI.
He intends to bring a change in developers approach towards Experience & Visual Design.
Design Thinking is a methodology that takes a solution based approach to solve problems that are ill-defined or unknown. It understands the underlying needs by re-phrasing the problem in a more human-centric way.
If applied, Design Thinking can enable plugin/theme developers decide which new plugin/theme is best to be made so that it can reach out to as many people as it can. It also helps define an action plan to increase the sales/awareness of existing theme/plugin.
Design Thinking uses a 6-step non-linear process that helps solve complex problems coming in way of products. It is a formalized framework of applying the creative design process to traditional business problems.

Gaurav Pareek
Working remotely, mental health, and life-hacks
He started using WordPress in 2010, and started contributing to the community in 2012. Gaurav has done small contributions to WordPress core, and has spoken at 3 WordCamps during this time. Currently he works as a Happiness Engineer at Automattic.
Apart from WordPress, he also participates in the Ubuntu and GNOME communities. He spoke at GUADEC in 2016 about the importance of accessibility in software, and in general contributes to multiple other open source projects.
This talk is ideally intended for everyone participating, but will be more geared towards people who work remotely, or from a home-office.
This includes freelancers, contractors, parents who work from home to take care of kids, and a lot more people who don’t get to interact a lot with people. However, the hacks I will discuss will be useful for people who work in traditional office environments as well.
Mental health is a taboo in Indian society, and apparently nobody wants to talk about it, especially people who are going through things. In this talk, I will talk about my own struggles about living and working alone, identifying issues that you might have, and some ways to optimize your circumstances to make the most of life.

Rick Banister
Listen Up
Rick Banister says “Listen up!”
Let people in the open-source community know you are listening by responding promptly.
Listen to more than just what users are saying, look for context clues to reach a greater understanding.
Fall in love with the problem, not the solution.
A language gap can still yield an experience overlap.
Don’t just listen to users’ words, observe their actions.
Don’t act like the expert, be the apprentice and let your users teach you everything they know.
Suspend your judgement in order to listen objectively.
Let data ask all the questions.
Some background: https://a8cdesignflow.wordpress.com/2017/09/30/listen-up/
Rick Banister is a designer at Automattic, currently leading the Jetpack design team.
He studied multimedia design at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. After graduating in 2005 he worked as an interactive art director for an advertising agency. He then became a partner in a small digital agency and built his first WordPress sites on WordPress 2.0. After seven years in client service he joined a DIY community startup, helping build a user base of 50,000.
Four years ago he reentered the WordPress world by applying to work at Automattic. Since then he has worked on GlotPress, WordPress.com, and Jetpack. He works remotely from New York’s Hudson Valley with his wife Ada and dog Lima Bean.
Listening is a key skill in a design practice. Stakeholder interviews and research are helpful tools, but only paint part of the picture. Growing as a designer requires an ever increasing amount of empathy.
The designer must become an active listener, open to new experiences, free of biases, and ever curious. Automattic incorporates listening into its design work in a number of ways—this talk will explore a number of those to give the audience a sense of how to be more receptive to customers and clients.
Designers at Automattic use techniques like ‘active listening’, observing user behavior, looking for the right problem considering solutions, suspending judgement, debiasing, and exploring data from all angles to avoid dubious correlations in order to best serve our customers.
