How I Started My Business During A Pandemic
In February 2020, I was laid off from my job after almost two years. I started looking for a new job, but a couple of weeks later, we were in a global pandemic. Job postings started drying up, and hiring came to a halt.
The next logical thing to do is open my own business, right? In this talk, I’ll discuss all the motions and emotions that I went through from never wanting to have my own company to starting up my own web development business during a pandemic. We’ll look at some of the things I did right, what I did wrong, what (and who) helped and what you need to consider before you do it yourself.
This talk is designed for small business owners and is for all skill levels.

Block Based Themes – The Future Of Full Site Editing In WordPress
Since the launch of Gutenberg, we have been enjoying the great experience of Gutenberg. So far we have been able to take benefit of the WYSIWYG – ‘What You See Is What You Get’, inside the post editor. What would it be like to use Gutenberg outside the editor? Would the traditional admin screens like customizer still exist?
WordPress is moving full steam ahead to land full site editing in 2021. What does it mean for end users and theme authors?
In this talk you will learn about what are Block based themes and how you would be able to use the features like Nav menus and widgets outside of post-editing screen. This talk will give you the taste of not only using the Block Based Theme but also a quick demo of how you can build one so easily.
You will know how the power to decide what the front end of the site will look like will ultimately reside in the user’s hands.

WordPress in the time of a Pandemic
Looking for the good things during bad times has become one of my survival tactics. Finding the good in bad situations – like looking for a phoenix rising from the ashes – has often helped me stay positive when it felt like the world was burning.
2020 felt a lot like that. From a global pandemic to murder hornets, to event cancelations, and personal struggles, 2020 was a difficult year for many, if not most, of us.
We pivoted so much and so often it felt like we were constantly reinventing ourselves, our businesses, and our community.
So what good things did I find in 2020? I discovered a deeper love for WordPress – and the WordPress community – that I ever imagined.
Join me as I share the good things that have come from a trying time, and how I think we can move forward in a globally-positive way.

Designing growth systems with WordPress
A business needs self-sustaining, predictable, revenue generating assets. Short term marketing tactics don’t produce sustainable results. Complex strategies don’t always account for the dynamic and changing needs of a business. A growth system can provide a framework for a business to design and build marketing assets consistently.
Freelancers and business owners will learn how to create their own versions of growth systems that can be automated and process driven without the constant need for their involvement.
WordPress sits at the core of this digital growth system enabling the creation of marketing assets.
